When this kitty arrived at her new foster home, she was very pregnant. Her human foster mom was ready to help this kitty mom give birth to her kittens in a safe place.
Young mom
The foster mom, Lynn, knew that this cat was special. She was already going to be a mom, but she was still so young. Lynn said:
“My heart breaks for this mama because she is just a kitten herself and one of the youngest moms I’ve ever fostered.”
The cat was very friendly and playful, and she got adjusted to her new surroundings quickly. She had difficulties finding her appetite and eating enough, but Lynn tried out lots of different foods and found out what the cat would eat. Now all she had to do was keep eating, stay healthy, and prepare for when her kittens would come.
The Potato Kittens
One morning about a week later, Lynn came into the foster room to a big surprise. She said:
“I had to rub the sleep from my eyes to make sure I wasn’t still dreaming when I walked in on six kittens this morning!”
The mama cat had given birth all by herself, and her kittens were doing great. She had five boys, four orange and one black, and one tortoiseshell girl.
Because Lynn was going on a trip to Idaho soon, she named the mama cat Ida and gave the rest of the kittens potato names: Tater, Tot, Waffle, Yam, Spud, and Frenchie.
After she had given birth, Ida was exhausted, but she still took very good care of her new babies. Even though she was working hard, she was happy and purring nonstop.
As the kittens grew up and learned to walk and eat on their own, Ida didn’t need to pay as much attention to them, but they were still a handful. When they weren’t napping or playing with their toys, they loved to wrestle with each other and spend time with their mama.
Mother and son
Finally, they had grown up enough to be adopted. They found their forever homes quickly, and Ida got to enjoy some peace and quiet before she too went off to her forever home.
But Ida was only an empty-nester for that short time, because she was adopted by the same person who had adopted one of her kittens, Tater. Ida went off into her new home to stay with her son forever.
Lynn was so happy that Ida had found a home, and that she would be able to stay with one of her kittens. She said:
“I’ve surprisingly never had a mama cat be adopted with her kitten, so this is such an exciting day!”
Ida certainly was a special cat. She was such a young mama, but she did an amazing job. Now she can live a wonderful life with her son in their new home.
