The early relationship between Coco and Mittens was typical of most cat and dog relationships. It could best be described as cold and distant.
But that somehow changed 13 years later when they decided to become cuddle buddies. The decade-plus friendship in the making was a complete shock to their humans.
Coco, a loyal Lab, and Mittens, a commanding tuxedo cat, pretty much ignored each other for the first 13 years of knowing each other. It was a “You don’t mess with me, I don’t mess with you,” type of thing.
Keeping a distance
They were both very sweet and affectionate with the humans in their family. These sisters loved to get cozy with everyone in the house. Except for each other.
Both Coco and Mittens came into the family when they were young and grew up together. So, their humans figured they would grow to love each other.
But that never happened. A decade went by without any affection between the two. It wasn’t that they hated each other.
And they wouldn’t fight. They just kind of pretended that the other one wasn’t there.
But one day, out of nowhere, that changed. Their dad Tom walked into a room in the house and was astonished by what he saw. It was something he never ever thought that he would witness.
Not only were Coco and Mittens acknowledging each other’s existence, but they were snuggling together. They had finally decided that they were both ready for some sisterly love after all these years.
This wasn’t a one-off thing. Their snuggle sessions are now a daily occurrence. Coco and Mittens can be found having several cuddle sessions per day.
“I don’t know how much time Coco has left, she’s slowing down drastically and showing serious signs of aging. Maybe Mittens can sense that or something,” Tom told The Dodo. “They cuddle for a few hours at a clip. It’s fairly common now, once or twice a day usually.”
Forever friends
And when Coco and Mittens aren’t getting cozy together, they are still hanging out. They just like to be close to each other.
You’ll often see them taking a little snooze on the same bed. Or starring dad down to get him to give them some treats.
While their friendship took more than a decade to come to fruition, both Coco and Mittens think it was well worth the wait.
